5 Summer Driving Safety Tips Every Parent Should Know

Summer is just around the corner, and that means hotter weather. Baseball games, hot dogs, and kids running around the house are all part of the fun. In the summer, your kids are out of school, and as a parent, it’s up to you to keep them entertained for 90 days.

A summer vacation or road trip might be a good way to do this. Summer is the perfect time to go for a drive with the kids, so here are some summer driving tips to keep you and them safe.

Use Car Seats When Needed

Driving with young kids this summer? Know the rules for when kids can stop using car seats. These car seat requirements can vary from state to state.

Make sure your child’s car seat is installed correctly and that he or she is buckled in safely. During multi-state trips, it’s best to keep your children in their car seats throughout the journey to comply with all state regulations.

In addition to keeping them safe, this also ensures your peace of mind, so you can enjoy your road trip to the fullest.

Keep the Kids Entertained

Long car trips can be a great adventure for kids, but they can also get restless after a few hours. Keeping them entertained is the key to a smooth and safe drive. Here are some fun and engaging activities to keep your little ones occupied:

  • In-Car Entertainment Systems: If your car has a built-in TV, you can set up their favorite movies or shows to keep them entertained for hours.
  • Portable Video Games: Devices like the Nintendo Switch are convenient for road trips. Make sure to bring along their favorite games.
  • Books and Audiobooks: Pack a selection of age-appropriate books. Audiobooks are also an excellent way to keep the kids engaged and can be enjoyed by everyone in the car.
  • Car Games: Classic games like spotting license plates from different states or playing “I Spy” can keep kids entertained and make the journey more fun.
  • Mad Libs: A book of Mad Libs can provide lots of laughs and keep everyone entertained by creating silly stories together.

By planning ahead with these activities, you can ensure your kids are entertained, allowing you to focus on the road and enjoy a stress-free drive.

Stay Cool and Hydrated

Summer road trips require a working air conditioner and plenty of drinks to stay hydrated. To prevent unexpected breakdowns (which can get sweltering hot fast in the summer), get your car tuned up to ensure it’s in top shape for the journey. Pack a cooler with refreshing drinks like water, juice, and sports drinks. Avoid sugary or caffeinated beverages, as they can make kids hyper.

Keep drinks easily accessible, so if the kids get thirsty, you can quickly hand them a bottle. Make sure the air conditioner works well and use it to keep the car cool. If you’re not on the highway, opening the windows for some fresh air can also help. Making everyone cool and comfortable makes for a pleasant and enjoyable trip.

Stay Focused on the Road

A safe and enjoyable journey depends on staying focused on the road. Smartphones can be valuable tools for navigation and emergencies, but they should be used carefully to avoid distractions.

Make sure your navigation system is set up before you leave, or have a passenger do it for you. If you don’t have an adult in the passenger seat and need your phone for navigation, set it up at the next rest stop. By doing this, you will have all the directions you need without having to fiddle with your phone while driving.

Pull over to a safe area if you need to make adjustments or take a call. Keeping your phone out of reach and silenced can prevent distractions and keep your attention on the road. For any necessary calls or messages, make a pit stop to address them safely.

Bluetooth and other hands-free options can be useful if you have an urgent call. Keep conversations short and to the point, so you can quickly return your focus to driving.

By managing your phone usage wisely, you will be able to ensure a safer trip for you and your family. Allow yourself to enjoy the journey and the time you spend with your family and friends without being distracted by technology.

Pack the Car Safely

The more efficiently you pack your car, the safer and more comfortable your journey will be. Be mindful of how you load your vehicle when preparing for a trip. Start by placing heavy items low and toward the center of the car to maintain balance and stability.

Your luggage and other items should not block your view through the rear windshield or any other sight lines in the car. Safe driving requires clear visibility, especially in heavy traffic. A roof rack or cargo carrier can help you free up space inside your car if you have too many items.

Be thoughtful about how you organize your supplies. Use packing cubes or bins to keep smaller items contained and prevent shifting during the drive. Secure loose items with bungee cords or straps to keep them in place.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can make your summer road trip safe and enjoyable for the whole family. We hope you have a fantastic journey filled with memorable moments and fun adventures.
