As parents, we all have dreams for our children. We just want what’s best for them, and we play a big role in making sure that happens. If you grew up in a bilingual home, you know how valuable early exposure to a second language can be. We all know that language learning starts early, and it sticks better when you’ve learned it in a fun way. Many parents have seen the advantage of using Spanish TV shows and movies in helping kids learn the language, and we couldn’t agree more.
In this blog post, we will be sharing some educational Spanish TV shows and movies that your kids will enjoy while learning a new language. Let’s start!
Nocturna (2007)
If your kid is scared of the dark, Nocturna is a great movie to watch together. It’s about a boy named Tim who’s afraid of nighttime, but one night, he ends up discovering the hidden world called Nocturna. It’s a place where all the nighttime things are actually being taken care of by magical creatures. There are characters who control dreams and make shadows as well. It’s a beautiful movie, especially if you’re into soft and cozy animation. This show may help your kid appreciate nighttime even more, instead of getting scared of it. Right now, you can watch it on Apple TV, YouTube, Amazon, and Google Play.
Super Genios (2017)
If you have a traditional TV service like Dish TV, you can look for Super Genios on Univision. It’s all about different kids showing off their creativity, talent, and everything in between in Spanish. This gives your kids the exposure they need to have a basic understanding of the language. It also encourages kids to learn the Spanish language in a fun and playful way. The kids your child will watch on the show answer questions, solve puzzles, perform, and everything in between. You can encourage your child to try answering the questions, too, even if they aren’t sure what was being said. Check local listings, as availability may vary.
Peppa Pig en Español
If your little one already loves Peppa Pig, watching Peppa Pig en Español on YouTube is such an easy and fun way to help them get used to hearing and understanding Spanish. Some TV shows can be overwhelming, especially if your kid is starting to learn the language. We highly recommend this show because it’s clear and slow, which means your kid can catch on to words and phrases naturally. So even if they don’t understand everything right away, they’ll follow along just fine. You can watch episodes on YouTube, so it’s really accessible.
Capitán Avispa (2024)
We had so much fun watching Capitán Avispa as a family. It’s a Spanish animated movie about a tiny superhero wasp who stands up for what’s right, so if you’re looking for a Spanish movie that’s filled with great life lessons, this one’s for you. The characters were colorful and fun, and the songs were super catchy too. We even found ourselves singing along. Since it’s in Spanish, your kids can easily follow because the visuals and emotions are so clear. It’s a fun way to let kids hear the language.
Extr@
We discovered Extr@ on YouTube, and it’s such a fun way to learn Spanish, even for adults. Best for older kids or teens, t’s a sitcom-style show that’s specifically programmed for language learners. If you’re familiar with the TV show Friends, it’s similar to this. The story follows a guy named Sam, who’s from the U.S. and comes to stay with two friends in Spain. The fun part is that Sam’s Spanish isn’t great, so as he learns, the audience learns too.
Coco (2017)
Coco is one of those Disney films that really hits the heart. It’s full of meaning, culture, music, and more that the whole family can appreciate. If you love listening to catchy Disney songs, you will really enjoy the songs. But what really made it special was the story about family, how important it is to remember where we come from and to stay connected to those we love even after they are all gone. Watching Coco in Spanish makes the story feel more authentic and emotionally rich, especially since it reflects Mexican culture so deeply. The use of the language felt natural, and the kids will easily understand the Spanish language because of how it was used throughout the film.
The Bottom Line
There are lots of educational Spanish TV shows and movies for kids. These are just the tip of the iceberg, so once you finish watching these shows and movies, make sure to look into other content to help your kid master the Spanish language as they grow up. Make sure that the content you are allowing them to watch is suitable for their age and for your educational goals, especially if you’re homeschooling. And as they progress, you can start introducing other, more advanced films and TV shows that would really hone their skills. The most important thing is to practice at home so that they get used to the language being used in their everyday lives.
