The Mysteries of Stonehenge

Stonehenge, a significant ancient stone circle located in England, dates back approximately 5,000 years. Situated in Salisbury Plain, it remains a subject of fascination and curiosity for visitors worldwide.

Despite its prominence, many aspects of its construction and purpose remain enigmatic. The huge stones at Stonehenge are stacked like giant puzzles, making people wonder where they came from and what they were for. Both historians and tourists are curious about who built them and why.

Though the people who build the heritage, their intelligence is evident. But the mystery of their legacy remains, waiting to be uncovered in history’s records. Let’s understand better and explore.

Why was it built?

It has sparked various theories about its origins. Some posit that ancient people constructed it using large stones around 5,000 years ago. The belief suggests that it is possibly for ceremonial or religious purposes.

Others opine it served as a site for marking significant events, such as solstices, or even as a burial ground. However, researchers propose that it was built gradually over many years.

In the 1960s, astronomer Gerald Hawkins theorized that Stonehenge might function as an ancient calendar. He believed these giant stones guided the timing of festivals and important occasions.

Even today, scientists continue to solve its mysteries, making it a captivating enigma from the past.

Who built it?

Farmers from the Eastern Mediterranean through the Iberian Peninsula built Stonehenge. They brought the tradition of making huge stone monuments to the UK.

Later, the Bell Beaker people, who came from Europe around 2,500 BC, also added to it. Locals traded with Europe, helping fund more construction. It wasn’t just one group, but several who left their mark on this ancient marvel.

The exact methods of construction and purposes behind Stonehenge are still debated. However, it shows the intelligence and craftsmanship of our ancient ancestors.

How was it built?

Its construction mystery revolves around massive stones, each 30 feet tall and weighing 25 tons. Experts suggest they dug a large hole with a sloping side, lined it with wooden stakes, and slowly rolled the stones into place.

Guess what? The larger stones, known as sarsens, originated from Marlborough, only 15 miles away. Smaller ‘blue stones’ made a longer journey, coming from Preseli Hills in southwest Wales, a staggering 140 miles from the landmark.
