How to Get Started with Making and Selling Your Own Tiaras

Tiaras are a classic hair accessory that can add elegance to any outfit. If you enjoy arts, crafts, and jewelry making, consider starting a small business designing and selling your own custom tiaras. With some simple materials and techniques, you can create beautiful and unique tiaras to sell online or at craft fairs. This guide will walk you through the basics of making and selling your own tiaras.

Selecting Materials

When making tiaras, you want materials that are lightweight yet durable. For the main band, choose a flexible wire like aluminum or steel. Opt for a wire thickness of around 18-20 gauge so the tiara will hold its shape but still be bendable. Other base materials like leather strips can work too.

For decorations, consider freshwater pearls, crystals, gems, ribbons, lace, flowers, and other embellishments. Freshwater pearls come in many sizes and colors, so they make a lovely lightweight addition to tiaras—you can find these at The Bead Traders. Crystals and gems will add sparkle. Look for flat back types that can be glued onto the tiara.

Creating the Tiara Band

Once you’ve selected your materials, it’s time to shape the tiara. First, cut your wire to the desired tiara length. For an average adult size, 20-22 inches is common. Use pliers to bend the ends of the wire towards each other to create a circular shape.

Next, grip the wire at various points with round nose pliers to make subtle indents and bends that will contour to the head. Create a gentle zigzag shape. Try the wire on your head as you go to test the fit and shape. The ends of the wire should meet comfortably at the back of the head. Once you have the shape, close the ends together by either twisting them together or using jewelry findings like bead caps.

Adding Decorations

Now the fun begins – it’s time to decorate your tiara base! There are many possibilities here, so get creative.

Glue on various shapes and sizes of crystals and gems for lots of sparkle. Cluster them together or space them out – it’s up to you. For a romantic, ethereal look, add pearls by gluing pearl beads or using headpins. Weave ribbons through the tiara ends or use them to create bows or ruffles along the band. Wire on lace for a vintage vibe. Affix feathers, flowers, or other 3D elements with hot glue or wire. The options are endless!

Finishing Touches

Finally, add any finishing touches needed to complete your tiara. Add extra glue dots to the decorations to reinforce them. Consider spraying with sealant if you want a shiny look. For a personalized touch, glue on small micro charms with your brand name. Now your lovely tiara is ready to wear or sell!
