Purge, Purge, Purge

This is the most important tip. You must purge your closet if you want it to be clutter-free. Chances are you have lots of clothing that you never wear. At least, you do if you’re anything like me. Why let it take up space in your closet? You can donate those items or even sell them through companies like Poshmark. The same goes for shoes and accessories. Let them go.

Trust me, you don’t need that ugly Christmas sweater from three years ago. And the jeans you’re trying to fit in from before you had kids probably aren’t even in style anymore. Let them go, and if you do go down a size or three, reward yourself by buying a new pair of jeans!

Use the Space Only for Clothing and Accessories

If you have bedding and other items that aren’t clothing in your closet, they need to go. Bedding is bulky and takes up loads of space that you can’t afford to spare. You can store bedding in containers under your bed or in your linen closet to get it out of the way.

Hang an Over the Door Shoe Rack

An over-the-door shoe organizer isn’t just for shoes. These are perfect for corralling everything from scarves to wallets to ties to sunglasses. When you store these items in an organizer, your closet doesn’t look cluttered. Everything is organized and in its place.

Store Off-Season Clothing

Most people don’t have enough closet space to hang all their clothing. Take the time to place off-season clothing into storage boxes and place in the top of your closet or under your bed. You can use vacuum bags to make the clothes easier to store.

Purchase Matching Hangers

As crazy at it sounds, having a mishmash of hangers can make your closet look cluttered. Go to Walmart, Dollar Tree, or your favorite retailer and purchase all new hangers. It’s inexpensive and will give your closet a more organized, clutter-free look. Amazon also has lots of great clothes hangers if you’re looking for something other than your typical plastic hangers.

Hang Two Items Per Hanger

If you have a small closet, use the tab from the top of a soda can to hang two items per hanger. Just slide the hanger through one of the holes on the tab and then hang the second hanger from the second hole. This allows you to hang more items without having your closet look cluttered.

How to Organize a Messy Closet

Your messy closet doesn’t have to stay that way. There are simple things you can do to make your closet the closet you’ve always wanted. Take the time to purge your closet and add more storage options. Also, make sure to remove items that don’t belong in your closet. This will give you more space and clear clutter.
