Step One: Wash and slice the strawberries.

Step Two: Peel two bananas. Cut the ends off into slices to use for the centers of the flowers. Use one banana to make the flower base (as pictured), and quarter the other banana to make the flower stems.

Step Three: Arrange the banana pieces and strawberry slices as pictured above to create your fruit flowers.

Step Four (Optional): Sprinkle some fresh herbs or basil leaves (or even the green leaves from the strawberries) to make leaves for the fruit flowers. You can skip this step if your kid doesn’t like herbs, or you could cut some out of green fruit like kiwi.

Getting kids involved in making food art is more than just fun—it’s a clever educational activity disguised as playtime. Here’s what it brings to the table:

  • Encourages Healthy Eating: Kids are more likely to eat what they’ve made, especially if it’s as fun as a fruit flower.
  • Boosts Creativity: Assembling a colorful fruit plate gets those creative juices flowing.
  • Develops Fine Motor Skills: Handling delicate pieces of fruit can refine their dexterity.
  • Teaches Patience: Food art takes time, which helps kids learn to take things step by step.
  • Quality Time: It’s a great opportunity for family bonding over a shared activity.
  • Educational: Kids learn about different fruits, their textures, and flavors while creating art.
